This vlog is very chatty! I worked on my portfolio, my resume, read some design magazines… all in preparation for a career fair! Oh ya, and it was mine and Shelly’s 4 Year Anniversary! xx

The same thing often happens to me, people would ask me "why didn't you go into architecture major? After all it's a more sought after occupation", and it would all come down to my gender, "is it because you're a girl? Because it's too hard for a girl? Too time consuming for a girl?" (In my country architecture major took upto 5 years to finish, meanwhile interior design is only 4 years and if you took the accelaration program would only took 3 years). And i'm over here like, what? Even my parents still dont understand what my job is. After countless of explaining, people still ask "but you also pick paint colors, right?", "but you still have to collaborate with an architect, right?". 🤦🏻♀️ excuse my rant😅
Don't be discouraged by Architects. I started off as a builder / remodeler before becoming an Interior Designer. As as builder / remodeler I saw poorly thought-out design's from Architects repeatedly. I would always have to "remedy" the situation in the field. As the years went by I grew to understand that Architects design from the outside in, which is not conducive to good interior space planning. It is eventually why I decided to become an Interior Designer (I could have become an Architect). But as an Interior Designer I design for real people, for traffic flow through space, for micro-environments that are conducive to work, or entertainment, or cooking, et cetera. After many years of being an Interior Designer and having become a "go-to" person for other Interior Designers, Kitchen & Bathroom Designers, Builders, and Remodelers, I truly saw and realized how what we do is so differentiated from "Architecture". Now with the modern advent of "big box stores" Interior Design has become an even bigger "element" being that now Interior Designers are called upon to create "vignettes" within the greater open space, that incorporate all the elements of good design with no structural limitations. And many real estate development projects start with old building that the developers are looking to re-purpose into living space, retail space, et cetera. Often I have created designed for projects such as these in which the developer ('s) – the people with the money (..!) told the Architect to incorporate my design ('s) into their structural plans. So do not get discouraged.! Go be the best Interior Designer you can.. carve out a niche, make yourself the expert.. walk boldly and stand tall .. create your vision for others to see, appreciate, and follow. NEVER back down or away in your design from somebody else, if you know you are right… NEVER.! Now, go touch the world with you gifts, talents, and abilities.!!!
I love watching her blogs
You are beautiful. I couldn't tell if that was Ninja Turtle snot or hazardous pond water but somehow you made drinking it look great. I do want to offer you some advice. At the career fair, you were disappointed that your field of study wasn't represented which lead to you feeling that Interior design is underappreciated in some way. I think the goal was to go and experience talking with vendors, feeling comfortable presenting yourself, refining your 2 min elevator job pitch, and just experiencing the whole process. Instead, you took it personal, shut yourself off, and didn't even give yourself an opportunity to talk to vendors that network with other vendors in your field. Most vendors travel and have social networks even outside of a specific field. I'm a mechanical engineer and if I went to an electrical engineer job fair, I would feel the same. These 2 fields are miles apart but people still lump-sum engineers in 1 pile. That said, your career has little do with your university studies. Before graduation, me my classmates shared a common vision of building ironman soldiers, tanks, missiles, racecars, or any other monumental cool factor jobs. I specialized in thermodynamics and robotics but I own a business flipping heavy construction equipment. My mech. eng. friends work anywhere from writing kids toy instructions, owning a pawn shop, owning a car dealership, to my best friend who does social study experiments for new paints. He even has to smell them in his report HA! My sister-in-law has a fashion merch. degree and makes more than all of us. She's a VP selling payroll software. A degree doesn't define you, it just says "Hey, I show signs of being a responsible human and can commit to finishing tasks even when I don't like to." Don't take it so personal. Study and do what you love. Learn to filter important from non-important. Follow the passion and don't get stuck somewhere that sucks it and the life out of your body. I had a few of those jobs. Who knows where you will end up. I love my job but if future me saw past me at graduation and told me what job I was going to have, I would have laughed and told them "Nope, I'm too qualified for that lame job and that's not what I specialized in." I said all that to say this, my job is laid back and enjoyable because of the environment, not the job itself. I have very little if any pressure on deadlines. I get off whenever I want to watch my kid play ball, help my lovely wife do whatever, or just go home and work remotely. I didn't have to fit my life to a job, it fits the way I like to live life. I wish you the best. Never turn down an opportunity for growth.
Subbed! Love the enthusiasm, you make me want to start a YT channel about ID 💕
This is what I want to be when I grow up any good colleges?
Just gonna leave this right here: https://www.cidq.org/definition-of-interior-design P.S. I'm going to my first IIDA conference this weekend & the strug is real getting my portfolio together haha
Subbed 🙂
it is so weird seeing you work in Cad with no mouse =))))))
Interior design is a very artistic expression and without it, Architecture would be a lifeless empty shell.
Stay creative, and never give up.
I am hoping to start an online college course for interior design very soon, and your video was inspiring to watch.
I just found my new obsession. ❤️
What the hell was that open???
You have so much passion. Don't give up or get discouraged with the Archi_Snobs. If you can try to get into a chapter with the IDS, NCIDA and so one. Networking there is easier than general career fairs.
All the best
Start your own interior design firm and with a team of designers and hire and architect turn the tables girl on them
Do you know any good colleges for Interior design. Possibly even like state schools
I'm a 4th year ID Student, I can absolutely relate to what you were saying at the end of this video. What really helped me is experiencing Interior Design outside of my home state, in Miami FL where I felt there was a stronger attitude and respect toward the interior design community. #IWantToBeAnInteriorDesigner
I'm 37, so i guess I'm too old to go to school for interior design. I'd feel like such a loser being the only person that old in my classes, which is such a bummer because I live and breathe interior design. 🙁
What school do you go to?
This is an informative and well-shot video. Great job.
Haha April 6th is my birthday : )
New subbie 💞 Loved this vlog. I hope you’ll be making more design related videos 😻
Oh girl, being an interior designer within an architects world.. I feel your pain! But unfortunately we have to be friends with them to get anywhere in the industry. The amount of times I've had to re-design interior spaces that architects have tried to have a go at is unreal! Just have to stay professional and collaborate as much as possible 😉
Does your brother have a cooking youtube channel? I love culinary and plan on being a chef, his sourdough bread was awesome. At least now you have a physical copy of your portfolio and 25 copies of your resume on hand because of that shitty fair. One positive outcome right lol.
Loved this vlog 💖
Your video shots and angles are really lovely. I liked the music, too!
what do you put in your green smoothie (ingredients)!!!
