Time for a challenge! H&H’s Joel Bray and Reiko Caron bring high style to a tiny, sterile space – a university dorm room at Ryerson University in Toronto. Learn how to fully transform a dull room into a stylish, young adult living space by adding personality with fabrics and accessories. Oh, and Joel builds a headboard in under 10 minutes. No big deal.
The space came with a number of restrictions, like bossy carpeting and a dull blue color palette, so Joel and Reiko had to work with the room’s decor instead of against it. After repositioning the furniture and removing a lot of the pieces, like burgundy curtains, a side table, a task lamp, chair, and “prison bedding,” an extension rod was added to display layered sheer and dark drapes. The same drapes are used to hide the closet, but on shower curtain rods since they’re adjustable. Joel created a headboard with cardboard, foam and pretty patterned fabric for the bed, which was styled with throw pillows and a sequined duvet. A classic table lamp brings light to the bedside and desk, while an inexpensive large framed map – which was DIY’d – adds the final pop of pretty, helping to transform the 100-square-foot room into a stylish, young adult living space.

I lived in Pitman Hall and I wish I had been this good at decorating it, the end result looks amazing!!
Missrable Dark Colours
I will move the bed to another end to avoid sleeping underneath the shelf.
From a Feng Shui perspective, anything over your head like shelving is effectively cutting off your head. No bueno. Also, that size dorm everywhere in America, houses 2 students. But still, very nice
I was like why are they covering the bulletin board??? I was so confused……..oh😂
I wouldn't feel comfortable sleeping with my head under such a heavy shelf. Other than that, wonderful job.
Since you can’t drill holes in the walls how did you get the window’s curtain rod to stay?
They blocked the heater though…
Jus me who is asking where the heck do u get the foam?
I love this. I think having a cozy room would entice everybody to stay in (and actually study) instead of feeling suffocated/bored which usually will lead people to leave the room 😍
Prison bedding?
Which prison?
Nice work! I like
Where's cupboard?
The original lamp was much better
just kind of cleaning, not a deco…
I wouldn't put my head underneath a floating shelf.
Girl which university has such a huge dorm room
Now add one more bed, another closet, and two dressers. That was my dorm. Oh, and a microwave and fridge. We all had to built lofts!
Every dorm room needs a flip and f*ck.
Just wow.
I’d have put the table under the cabinet and turned bed vertical to make more space.
Good idea and theory but you'll never spend enough time in your dorm to make this worth it. Also, having to move all that shit out at the end of the year..
The shelved on top of he bed…that make me very nervous….the right place is with the desk…decorating a room is not only to look beautiful, safe and functional.
Its a dorm. Main purpose of the room is to study.
Knock Knock
Who’s there?
The bookcase over your head, silly!
Only Laurie Loughlins kid would have a dorm room as big as this.
I would love to do this on our dorm room but the owner never let us decorate it!
Shelf over head of the bed….imagine if it falls off while you are sleeping.
The problem with the bookcases over the headboard is the person will not be able to lean back on the headboard due to not enough room for their torso, and will hit their head getting up in the morning. I might have tried the desk under the window and made the bed a daybed on the long wall with bolsters on the wall side, if it would fit.
Really smart looking, only worry for me would be having my head under those shelves when in bed. I would definitely hit it!
I hate how space consuming the U layout is. I would make an L layout with the bed head facing the door ad the study table next to it lookong toward the window.
“We really have our work cut ooot for us!”
Lovely 💟🎀new subscr
Very nice
looks nice.
That cabinet is dangerous…………
Thanks to Living big in a tiny house I saw a full house fitting in there
my dorm room looked like a prison cell.
That’s really nice!
I just feel that the bookcase above the bed is unnecessary, and would not allow one to sit on the bed with the wall support, else everything is awesome
This is good but could have done with a little less beige and at least one contrasting colour in the palate.
jolie, j'adore
I think the bed should hav been pushed to the opp.wall so that both the head nd legs r safe from hitting dat cabinet over therr
Very good . Good job
I actually would have preferred the first look…
nice
remember to use wide angle lenses after the make over just to make sure it looks roomier.
so the before is basically not moved in and the after is when someone lives there
these people have no idea what a dorm room is actually in general of all america. nor know the rules of college dorms nor budget. ridicoulous, expensive and not at all practical.
wow youre forgetting that dorms are WAAAYYY smaller than that plus its usually and MOST LIKELY 2 ppl in one room. this is HUUUGE for most dorms
